Leiths of Gartly
James Leith built Leith Hall in 1650. His wife was Margaret Strachan of Glenkindie. She was the daughter of Alexander Strachan of Glenkindie. James and Margaret had three sons and two daughters. One son is un-named, he other two were:- John Leith, Laird of Leith Hall, and Alexander Leith of Freefield & Glenkindie (who married Margaret Hacket ?).
Alexander 3 of Bucharne married Margaret Hacket. His father was John 2nd of Bucharne b; abt 1691 married Beatrice a grandaughter of Sir Patrick Ogilvie. Alex. 3rd had 2 brothers John of Blair and George. Alexander 4 of Bucharne Provost of Aberdeen

From Epitaphs & inscriptions from burial grounds & old buildings in the north-east of Scotland, with historical, biographical, genealogical, and antiquarian notes, also, an appendix of illustrative papers (1875) an inscription on north wall of parish school, formerly on south wall of old church : —
“Under the fiat stone, 5 feet south from this wall, lies the body of James Leith of Whiteriggs, who died 20 Feb. 1788, aged 63. And on the south side of that stone, lies the body of Margaret Young, his wife, who died 6 April 1783, aged 58. The
virtue of their lives made their deaths lamented, and this stone is in gratitude erected to their me-
mories by their children. There are also interred the body of Margaret Hacket, his mother, who
died in April 1765, aged 56. And Doctor Charles Leith, his brother, who died 6 of May 1731, aged 56. And also of two of his children, PiAMSAY Leith, and Leith, who died in infancy. ”

“James Leith of Whiteriggs or Leithfield, and Margaret Young spouses, whose names are men-
tioned on a tablet erected near this stone, left six children, viz. Alexander Leith, died at sea in
Jan. 1805, aged 53. John Leith, died at Surinam, in 1805, surgeon of the 16th regiment of Foot, aged
49. James Leith, died at Madras, 12 Nov. 1829, a Major-General in the service of the East India ”
From The baronage of Angus and Mearns, comprising the genealogy of three hundred and sixty families:
JAMES LEITIT, Esq. of Whiteriggs, Mearns, an offshoot of the family of Leithhall, and father of Major-General James Leith,
H.E.I.C.S., who died at Madras, and Dr. Leith of the Army Medical Department, who died in the West Indies. He died
in 1788. [Monument, Fordoun^]. His representative is James Arnott, Esq. of Leithficld, W.S. The surname of Leith is of great antiquity in Scotland. The original extensive possessions of the family, in Mid-Lothian, were Eestalrigg, &c., in the territory of Leith, whence the name is derived. [Baronage, p. 224.] At what period the family settled in Aberdeenshire is un-
known. The first recorded progenitor of the Leithhall family was ” Patrick de Lethe,” who settled on the lands and was
designed of Edingarrioch, in Aberdeenshire, A.D. 1120.
