Timeline:
1712 Earl of Mar uprising (old Pretender) at Braemar
1758-1759 Lands of Murtle divided up and feu’d out.
1779 Peterculter church built

1798 Register of men 15-60 taken with a view to forming a militia against French invasion (Napoleon)
1799 famine
1843 The minister of the parish and many of his people “came out” in 1843. A church was erected within three months after the Disruption, and called Coutlaw Kirk. A manse also was provided. The church was vacated in 1895, but services continued to be held in it three times a year. The old manse was sold and a new one built with the proceeds. Peterculter church, manse, hall, and stables were all erected in 1895. The Free churches of Cults, Kingswells, and Drumoak were built for congregations, which formed part of Peterculter congregation at Coutlaw Kirk.

In 1798 “Men of Lower Deeside” militia list of men aged between 15 and 60 years:
– No Leiths in Parish of Peterculter. i.e. none recorded in Lands of Binghill, Lands of Murtle, Lands of Countesswells, Lands of Culter. That seems quite odd as Joseph Leiths children Joseph and Seton were both born in Murtle. The list might exclude married men with >2 children but that doesn’t explain why Joseph Leuth ^ James Leith, who would have been teenagers in 1798 are not included.

The Lands of Murtle in Peterculter were bought by the master of Aberdeen in 1695 and leased out to tacksmen until 1758, when they were divided up and leased out in separate feus. That suggests the Leiths may been newcomers to the area as new tenants/tacksmen ?

The church in Peterculter was built in the 1770s and so that may explain why early marriage records for Peterculter seem to have been kept at Banchory Devenick.

“Births: There are no entries March 1660–November 1661. They are blank December 1664–June 1674, and April 1679–September 1682. Records are defective for 1699, also 1727–1731, inclusive. Appendix of irregular entries 1798–1825 occur after the record for 1820. Mothers’ names are recorded after 1784.
Marriages: Transcribed entries of proclamations prior to 1818, when record of marriages commences.
Deaths: Burials until 1650 and no entries May 1648–September 1649. Records are blank September 1650–March 1701. Mortcloth Dues from latter date to 1818. There is only one entry October 1730–January 1733 and no entries for 1748. Records are blank November 1750–January 1785, except one entry. At January 1818, a record of deaths and burials commences. ”

From the new statistical account: ” Parochial Registers.— The oldest session record begins in the year 1676, and continues to 1696 ; the second, from 1709 to 1714; the third, from 1720 to 1744; after which year they have been regularly kept to the present time. The register of baptisms begins in 1726, and has been carried on to the present time. The register of marriages begins in 1756, and is continued to 1793; then there is a blank of twenty years; and from 1813, it has been regularly kept. A cash-book of the distribution of the poor’s funds has been kept from the year 1744; and minutes of the meetings of heritors, for the last ten years, have been regularly kept.”
“Births: Entries July 1729–February 1734 are somewhat irregular. Mothers’ names are recorded after 1744.
Marriages: Except for twenty one transcribed entries relating to proclamations 1681–1683, and one entry for 1685, there is no record previous to January 1756. Records are blank except four entries 1812–1813, March 1793–June 1819.
Deaths: Record 1721–1756 transcribed only entries of Mortcloth Dues. They are blank November 1756–January 1767, when a record of burials commences. These records are blank October 1787–July 1819. ”

Mothers’ names very seldom recorded March 1714–December 1812 inclusive.
Marriages: There are no entries July 1708–January 1710, June 1710–June 1711, July 1715–April 1717, nor January 1729–June 1730. Records are blank July 1731 to February 1772, and July 1785–May 1793. After May 1798, there are only four entries of marriages, viz., one for 1799, and for 1800, and two for 1802; but there are entries relating to proclamation fees 1805–1825, and one entry for 1830.

Perhaps William Leith is son/brother of George Leith/Isobel Murray of Newhills (see above) based on childrens names George/Isobel, although no birth of William recorded (would have been earlier than 1700 and no records from that time).
Is this same John Leith as in Peterculter ? Son Thomas bapt 9th July 1721 in Peterculter and bapt 10th July 1720 here so might be same person. Bit unlikely that the year would be wrong though so would need to have been baptised twice.
